Mumbadevi Temple is a renowned ancient temple dedicated to 'Goddess Mumbadevi'. This beautiful temple is situated in the heart of Mumbai and was built in the 18th century. The 'Koli' fishermen or the early inhabitants of Mumbai greatly respect and honor Goddess Mumbadevi and consider her as their guardian. Goddess Mumbadevi is recognized as 'Goddess Shakti' or the Goddess of Power.

Today, this elegant temple is located amidst the crowded steel, cloth markets and jewelry shops in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai. Mumbai City derives its name from the Goddess Mumbadevi and therefore, this Temple is truly an important religious place for the dwellers of this beautiful city called Mumbai. Mumbadevi is also considered as the patron Goddess of Mumbai city.

Where Mumbai Comes From

The word "Mumba" was formed from two words, "Maha" and "Amba" — together, "great mother." It is from this name that the city of Mumbai draws its own.

Mumbadevi was the patron goddess of the Agri, the salt collectors, and the Koli, the fishermen — the original inhabitants of the seven islands of Mumbai. They regarded her as their protector and as Maha Shakti, and she is still honoured today as the patron goddess of the city she named.

History

A Temple Rebuilt in Faith

c. 1675

The Mumbadevi Temple is believed to have first been built at Bori Bunder, where the Koli fishermen and Dravidians offered their earliest prayers to the goddess.

1737

After the original temple was destroyed, it was reconstructed at Zaveri Bazaar, Bhuleshwar — the site where it still stands today, amid the city's jewellery and cloth markets.

Today

Devotees continue an unbroken tradition of worship at this site, carrying forward the same faith that has anchored the temple for nearly three centuries.

The Legend

Eight Arms, One Protector

According to legend, Lord Brahma sent the eight-armed goddess Mumbadevi to vanquish a demon known as Mumbaraka, who had long terrorised the local people.

Defeated, Mumbaraka fell to his knees and begged the goddess to carry his name forward. She granted his wish — and gave him leave to build her a temple. Thus the shrine of Mumbadevi rose in the heart of the city that would one day carry her name.
